Wool Covers

If you desire a cloth diaper cover made from natural fibers, then wool covers are the perfect choice.  Wool fibers will hold up to 35% of their own weight in liquid which makes it a great choice for heavy wetters or nighttime use.  The air circulation provided by the naturally breathable wool fibers helps prevent diaper rash too.  Wool is durable, long-lasting, and resistant to stains and odors.  The lanolin found in wool fibers not only has anti-bacterial properties, but it helps make the wool diaper cover water repellent.   

Washing wool diaper covers isn’t difficult.  Wool diaper covers should be washed every 2 weeks or when soiled.  Between uses simply air dry the cover and reuse.  When it is time to wash the cover, rinse it off in cold water and then fill a sink with warm water with a little bit of wool wash.   You can use something like Sheepish Grins Foaming Wool Wash or Imse Vimse Wool Shampoo.  If you don’t have those on hand you can use a small amount of baby soap.  Let them soak for a little while and rinse them off.  Fill up the sink again with warm water. Add the covers and put some lanolin in the water.  You can easily add Sheepish Grins Liquid Lanolin to the water.  If you use solid lanolin you will need to put the lanolin in very hot water to melt it before adding it to the sink.  Allow the diaper covers to soak in the lanolin mixture at least 15 minutes.  Drain the water and gently press out excess water.  Do not wring your wool diaper covers.  Lay the wool diaper cover flat in a dry towel.  Roll the diaper cover in the towel to remove the excess water.  Then lay flat to dry.  You may not need to lanolize each time you wash  your wool diaper covers.  If you wool diaper covers are starting to hold an odor or if they are starting to wick then it is time to lanolize your wool diaper covers.
