Taking care of your cloth
diapers is an important part of cloth diapering. Some detergents are designed to be used with
cloth diapers. If you have any wool
diaper products you will need to care for them differently from your other
cloth diapering products. At Thanks Mama
not only will you find products to simplify washing cloth diapers, but you will
also find products to help you combat stains and odors.
Washing cloth diapers isn’t
too difficult. While manufacturers have
slightly different washing recommendations, they are similar to these basic
instructions: Place dirty diapers in the
washing machine and run a cold rinse.
Then run a hot wash with approximately half the recommended additive
free detergent. Detergents like the
BumGenius Diaper Detergent and the GroVia Tiny Bubbles Laundry Detergent are
formulated for use with cloth diapers.
Rocking Green makes different detergents that are suitable for water that
is hard, soft, or in between. After the
hot wash run an additional cold rinse.
You want to make sure all the detergent is rinsed out to prevent
odors. After the extra rinse you can dry
your cloth diapers in the dryer or on a line.
Some brands of diaper covers and cloth diapers should not be placed in
the dryer on high heat. Save some drying
time by using a wool dryer ball.
Wool diaper products need
special care and require lanolizing to keep them waterproof. Most wool diaper covers can be easily washed
in the sink. Simply fill a sink with
some warm water and add some wool wash like Imse Vimse Wool Shampoo or the
Sheepish Grins Foaming Wool Wash. Let
your wool diaper covers soak for a little while before draining the sink and
adding rinse water. Once they are rinsed
you can also lanolize your covers in the sink.
Fill it with warm water and add lanolin like the Sheepish Grins Liquid
Lanolin or melt some of the Sheepish Grins Solid Lanolin in hot water and add
it to the water in the sink. Allow your
covers to soak before draining the water. Lay the wool items in a towel. Roll the towel to squeeze out the excess
water and then remove the wool cover and lay flat to dry.
You will also find
products here at Thanks Mama to help you solve issues with cloth diaper stains
or odors. The BumGenius Odor Remover can
be sprayed on cloth diapers just before you place them in the diaper pail. For stains you can treat them with products
like the Imse Vimse Wash Away Stain Soap or the Imse Vimse Gall Soap Natural Stain
Remover.
